Desired State Versus Reported State

16 October 2026

Technical diagram of desired state being compared with reported state across edge nodes and fed into a reconciliation loop.

Desired state is the target condition for your environment. It can describe which workloads should run, which versions should be deployed, what policies should apply, and how systems should be configured. Reported state is the live feedback coming from the edge. It reflects what devices, nodes, and services say they are actually doing at a given moment. The difference between the two is where drift appears. A node may miss an update, a service may restart with the wrong configuration, or connectivity issues may leave part of the fleet out of alignment. MeteorEdge is designed to help teams compare intent with live conditions across distributed environments. That visibility supports better operational decisions when reported conditions no longer match what was planned.
